Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) chairman Hunor Kelemen voiced his satisfaction about his party's results in the local elections on Sunday.
UDMR leader estimates he has nearly 200 elected mayor. "We have kept a significant support within the Hungarian community. We are still the strongest Hungarian political force in Romania. (...) Statistically, we're very near to 200 mayors under UDMR's log, and there are seven or eight mayors supported jointly with the Hungarian Civic Party [PCM - author's note]. So we can see this as a shared success, because this was ultimately our goal when we had a deal with the PCM. We have more mayors with the PCM than we had before. This makes us happy, and I congratulate all those who earn mandates," Hunor Kelemen commented on Monday.
According to him, UDMR has won several new mayoralties, including the northeastern municipality of Satu Mare; in Cluj-Napoca, the biggest city in Transylvania, the main Hungarian ethnic party will have six or seven local counselors, up from five in the previous term; in Cluj County, the estimate is six or seven county counselor, up from five.
