Hungary's President Sulyok Tamas will attend on Sunday, 15 March, the events organised in Targu Secuiesc for the Day of Hungarians Worldwide and the commemoration of the 1848-1849 Revolution, the leadership of the Covasna County Council (CJ) announced on Thursday.
According to the quoted source, the events will begin Sunday morning with a religious service, followed by wreath-laying at memorial plaques dedicated to the heroes of the revolution, as well as the traditional parade of mounted hussars and allegorical floats representing tradition-keepers from neighbouring villages.
The official ceremonies, which will take place in the central park of Targu Secuiesc, will start at 14:00. Among the participants will be Hungary's President, Dr. Sulyok Tamas, who will deliver a festive speech, as well as the Hungarian Ambassador to Bucharest and representatives of the Hungarian Consulate General in Miercurea-Ciuc.
In the city of Sfantu Gheorghe, the public gathering will take place on Sunday from 13:00 in the city centre and will be preceded by wreath-laying at several monuments dedicated to the 1848 Revolution, a parade of hussars and artistic performances.
The participants in the ceremonial parade will set off from two points in the city, namely from the Varadi-Bartalis funeral pillar in the Simeria district and the Epresteto battle monument in the Garii district. They will converge in the Central Square, displaying, as in previous years, Székely and Hungarian flags over 100 metres long along the route.
In Covasna, the participants will gather in the city centre at 13:30, from where an equestrian parade will proceed to the ceremony site. The event will include speeches by officials, an artistic programme and wreath-laying at commemorative monuments, and in the evening, from 19:00, the Covasna Cultural Centre will host a festive gala dedicated to the event.
On Saturday, ceremonies and wreath-laying will also take place at the Bodvaj iron smelter, where, under the guidance of Gabor Aron, the first cannons used by the Székelys in the 1848-1849 battles were cast. On Sunday, events will be held in Baraolt, as well as in nearly all towns and villages in the county with Hungarian communities.
The activities are organised by local authorities, cultural institutions, churches and civil organisations, and temporary traffic restrictions will be put in place in order to ensure the smooth running of the events.
