The portfolio guarantee program for SMEs run by the Investment and Development Bank (IDB) must be accelerated and adjusted to current market conditions, in order to facilitate companies' access to financing and support investments, Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare said on Tuesday in a Facebook post.
According to him, the instrument can mobilize approximately 6 billion lei in the economy.
"The IDB portfolio guarantee program for SMEs must be accelerated and adapted to current market realities. I discussed, at the Ministry of Finance, with representatives of the Investment and Development Bank and the 12 partner commercial banks, how the portfolio guarantee program for SMEs works in practice and what needs to be adjusted to make it faster and more accessible. The IDB's role is as concrete as possible and all the more important in 2026: to help Romanian companies obtain financing more easily and under better conditions, in order to develop," the minister wrote on the social network.
Through the portfolio guarantees offered by the IDB, SMEs can obtain bank loans for working capital and investments from partner banks with much lower risk and at more advantageous interest rates, the minister emphasized.
"We want to accelerate the use of this instrument and adjust it to current market conditions, based on direct feedback from banks and companies. We are talking about a program that can mobilize approximately 6 billion lei in the economy and is intended for SMEs that want to invest, expand or stabilize their activity. We will continue these meetings periodically, to monitor how the program works in the field and to ensure that the financing reaches, as quickly as possible, where it is needed: to companies that create jobs and support economic growth," added Nazare.
