Sport is a remedy for combating not only health problems, but especially some social ones, President Klaus Iohannis declared on Wednesday, at the Cotroceni Palace, where he received the athletes who will represented Romania at the Olympic Games in Paris.
"In the times we live in, with complex changes and challenges, sport manages to be an anchor for the fundamental values of the society we live in, namely dignity, respect, loyalty, discipline and fair play. Sport breaks down barriers, unites cultures, promotes cooperation and solidarity between nations, peace and tolerance, when the only things that really matter are talent, seriousness and work", the head of state pointed out.
He conveyed to the athletes that only qualifying for the Olympic Games already means a success.
"We all know that the road to this point has not been easy. Each of you has made sacrifices, given up a lot and worked considerably to develop your talent. The true struggle of an athlete is with their own limits, and you constantly surpass yourself. Olympic-level performance is built through hard work, with a lot of determination, discipline and passion, and you are true models for the entire Romanian society. I convey all my appreciation for the way you have profiled yourselves as true leaders in the sports disciplines in which you are active", said Klaus Iohannis.
The President recalled that, a century ago, Romania participated, for the first time, in the Olympic Games, also in Paris.
"We appreciate all your efforts so far and we will follow your performances at the Olympics. You have a supporter in me and I am convinced that the whole country is with you and waiting for the Romanian anthem to be heard many times in Paris and to enjoy the good results which you will have. You will once again be the ambassadors of our country and I am glad that there are so many of you who will carry the Romanian flag with honor and pride", said the head of state.
At the end of the ceremony, Klaus Iohannis handed the Romanian flag to the two athletes who will carry it at the opening of the Olympic Games - Ionela and Marius Cozmiuc.
The Olympic Games in Paris take place from July 26 to August 11.
The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games is scheduled for July 26.
Rowers Ionela and Marius Cozmiuc, husband and wife, will be the bearers of the Romanian flag at this ceremony which, for the first time in the history of the Olympics, will take place outside the stadium, on the Seine river. Approximately 94 barges will carry the athletes on the 6 kilometers of the stage of the opening show at Paris 2024.
