Businessman Ion Tiriac said on Saturday, during the draw for the Tiriac Open tennis tournament (ATP 250), with total prizes of 596,035 euros, that once the competition is moved to the future sports facility he intends to build in Otopeni (close to Bucharest), the sporting event would be completely different.

"I want to welcome everyone, especially the players. I apologize for the weather. I can't do anything about it. We tried to do everything we could, and three months ago no one understood and no one believed that we would be able to organize the event as it is here today. I apologize if there is any inconvenience, but we tried to do our best after 35 years of organizing this tournament. I don't know how it will be next year, but according to the promises of the president of the country, we will have the approval for a indoor stadium, probably with 11,000 seats, which will transform the competition into a completely different event. As you have seen, we are trying to do our best. But I am happy for those who worked so hard in such a short time," said Tiriac.

Tiriac said he regrets the fact that the tournament cannot take place at the BNR Arena.

"It is the only international, annual, sports competition in Romania. This tournament has a history of almost 35 years. Let's hope that it will last another 35 years, under slightly different conditions. Let's hope that if all the approvals and bureaucracy that we cannot put aside are cleared up, in 2027 we will play it in a new stadium, which will have 10,000 seats, if it is indoor", he added.

The best-ranked Romanian tennis player in singles, Filip Cristian Jianu (23 years old, no. 241 ATP), will face the American Nishesh Basavareddy (100 ATP), in the first round of the Tiriac Open tournament (ATP 250), with total prizes of 596,035 euros, which will debut on Monday at the National Tennis Center in Bucharest, according to the draw made on Saturday.
