Jaqueline Cristian qualifies for quarter-finals

Romanian tennis player Jaqueline Cristian qualified on Wednesday for the quarter-finals of the WTA 250 tournament in Osaka (Japan), which has a total prize fund of 275,094 US dollars, after a comeback victory against Spanish player Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, winning 0-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Jaqueline Cristian (aged 27, ranked 47th the the WTA) needed two hours (1 hour 57 minutes) to overcome the tournament's eighth seed.

The Romanian was soundly defeated in the first set (0-6), but started the second set strongly, taking a 3-0 lead. She held onto her advantage, maintaining a break up and closing the set 6-4. In the decider, the Spaniard led 2-1, but Jaqueline Cristian won five consecutive games to take the set and the match.

Bouzas (aged 23, ranked 40th in the WTA) had won their only previous encounter, last month in the first round at Beijing, with a score of 6-4, 6-0.

With this victory, Jaqueline Cristian secured a cheque for 6,815 US dollars and 54 WTA ranking points. In the quarter-finals, she will face the winner of the match between top seed Naomi Osaka (Japan) and defending champion Suzan Lamens (Netherlands).

Cristian is also scheduled to play in the doubles event on Wednesday, partnering Serbian Olga Danilovic against the duo of Nadia Kichenok (Ukraine) and Makoto Ninomiya (Japan).
