The Institute for Advanced Studies for Levantine Culture and Civilization will organize, at the Palace of Parliament, in August, the World Congress of Syriac Studies and an international conference on Christian Arab studies.
"During August 3-7, 2026, the Institute for Advanced Studies for the Culture and Civilization of the Levant and the Parliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy will host in Bucharest the 14th World Congress of Syriac Studies and the 12th International Conference on Christian Arab Studies, organized under the aegis of the Romanian Parliament, in partnership with the Romanian Academy. It is a historic event, which transforms the Romanian capital into a global center of academic and cultural dialogue, taking place without requesting funding from the state budget and being supported through the partnerships of the organizers," states a letter addressed to the Permanent Bureau of the Chamber of Deputies by the President of the Scientific Council of the Levant Institute, Emil Constantinescu, and the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy, Ionut Vulpescu.
The organizers request that several rooms in the Palace of Parliament be made available, free of charge, for the inaugural session, panels and plenary conferences of the event.
"The congress is meeting for the first time in an Eastern European country, with 400 participants from 35 countries, over 300 scientific presentations and representatives of 176 prestigious universities from around the world. The event benefits from the participation of high-ranking European officials, including the Vice-President of the European Commission Roxana Mînzatu and the European Commissioner responsible for the Mediterranean region, numerous senators and deputies. The theme of the congress, 'Peace and dialogue - premises for protecting tangible and intangible heritage', underlines the urgency of preserving heritage in conflict zones and highlights, by organizing it in Bucharest under the aegis of Parliament, Romania's role as a cultural and diplomatic mediator between the East and the West", the document approved by the President of the Chamber of Deputies also states.
