The Turkish Embassy in Bucharest sent a message of condolences to Mircea Lucescu's family, the Romanian people and all football fans on Tuesday evening, stating that he was not only a coach, but also an ambassador of the friendship between the two countries.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Mircea Lucescu, a legendary name in the world of football. Lucescu, who served as the head of our national team, which won the Super League championships with Galatasaray and Besiktas, was not only a coach; he was also an ambassador of friendship between Turkey and Romania," the message posted on the Turkish Embassy's Facebook account reads.

The message also mentions the "gratitude" that Turkey has for Lucescu.

"We will always remember him with respect and gratitude. Condolences to his family, the Romanian people and all football fans. Rest in peace," the Turkish diplomatic mission to Romania also said in a post.

The great coach Mircea Lucescu died on Tuesday evening, at the age of 80. The announcement was made by the Bucharest University Emergency Hospital, where the former coach was hospitalized.
