The Ministry of Economy, Digitalization, Entrepreneurship and Tourism (MEDAT) will manage funds of 45 million lei, which will be used to settle technical investments made by telecommunications operators, without commercial purpose, with STS supervision, so that intervention teams can reach those in danger more quickly and accurately after calling the emergency number 112.

"The government has approved, at the initiative of the Ministry of Economy, Digitalization, Entrepreneurship and Tourism (MEDAT), the update of the legal and financial framework to improve the localization of calls to 112, so that intervention teams can reach those in danger faster and more accurately. The necessary funds, 45 million lei, will be managed by MEDAT and will be used to settle technical investments made by telecom operators, without commercial purpose, with STS supervision. The normative act aims at the effective implementation of the measures previously established, but not implemented at the end of 2024, due to the short deadlines and the government reorganization that led to the abolition of the Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digitalization," a press release from the relevant ministry, sent to AGERPRES on Thursday, states.

According to the institution, the need for intervention results from the obligation to improve the accuracy of location information for emergency calls to 112, so that intervention services can reach people in critical situations more quickly and accurately.

"The measures implement the provisions of GEO no. 48/2023 and aim at an essential public interest, the safety of citizens. The project updates the institutional and budgetary framework following the establishment of MEDAT through GEO no. 153/2024 (...) The providers of public mobile electronic communications networks are responsible for making the investments, and the functional beneficiary of the results is the National Single System for Emergency Calls, administered by the Special Telecommunications Service. STS will certify the implementation of technical solutions and compliance with the accuracy and reliability criteria, based on the technical and financial documentation submitted by the providers. MEDAT will settle the certified expenses", specifies the cited source.

The relevant ministry emphasizes that the proposed financing mechanism is strictly limited to the actual costs necessary to implement the technical solutions, being designed in accordance with state aid rules, without commercial use of the investments by the suppliers.
