Save Romania Union (USR) MEP Vlad-Marius Botos, vice-president of the Commission for Regional Development, made public, through a press release, that he sent a letter on Wednesday to Commissioner Elisa Ferreira, responsible for Cohesion and Reform within the European Commission, on the compliance with the requirements of safety regarding the Braila Bridge, built with European funds.

"The subject of this letter is compliance with construction safety standards regarding the Braila Bridge, a large infrastructure project financed with the contribution of European funds. Inaugurated with great pomp by the public authorities, the suspension bridge over the Danube in the eastern Braila area is the subject of some news and of some posts on the social media pages that show that it would have portions that are not in accordance with the safety that people have the right to expect," reads the press release sent by Vlad-Marius Botos, agerpres reports.

"Non-observance of safety measures, inadequate bolts, defective poured asphalt, could have disastrous effects on those who use the bridge. We need to know as soon as possible if the information that is now circulating in the media is true, if the bridge is a danger, in order to fix as much as possible the situation," said the USR MEP.

The director of National Road Infrastructure Management Company (CNAIR), Cristian Pistol, declared on August 11 that the irregularities in the asphalt on the suspension bridge over the Danube are generated by the non-compliance with the tonnage restrictions of 7.5 tons, imposed on hot days, and added that the verification of the tonnage of the vehicles traveling on the suspended bridge over the Danube belongs to the State Inspectorate for Road Transport Control (ISCTR).

The Minister of Transport, Sorin Grindeanu, declared on August 16, during a press conference, that the bumps on the Danube Bridge appeared especially on the direction from Tulcea to Braila. He emphasized that certain rules imposed by the National Road Infrastructure Management Company and other authorities must be respected. The Minister of Transport also said that the works are under warranty.

The suspension bridge over the Danube in Braila - the largest suspension bridge ever built in Romania, the third in size in Europe and the last bridge over the Danube before it flows into the Black Sea - was inaugurated on July 6, 2023. The ceremony was attended by, among others, the President Klaus Iohannis, the President of the Senate, Nicolae Ciuca, the Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, and the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Sorin Grindeanu, and the European Commissioner for Transport, Adina Valean.

The initial value of the project was 1.996 billion RON, without VAT, non-refundable external funds, and the builder is the Astaldi S.P.A. - IHI Infrastructure System Co. Ltd. association.
