The National Liberal Party (PNL) will wait to see the governing programme proposed by prime minister-designate Luca Niculescu before deciding whether to support his cabinet, said Daniel Buda, head of the Romanian delegation within the European People's Party (EPP) group in the European Parliament.

"The National Liberal Party has made it very clear that we have a proposal from the president, that we will wait to see Mr Luca Niculescu's governing programme and the ministers he wishes to put forward and, naturally, PNL will take a decision through its statutory bodies, as it has always done. But this won't be a blank cheque given to anyone," Buda said during a meeting with a group of Romanian journalists.

According to the Liberal MEP, Romania must stay on its pro-European path if it wants to remain a credible international partner.

Fellow Liberal MEP Gheorghe Falca said PNL wants the prime minister-designate's programme to incorporate the direction set by the party over the past year.

"We proposed both a candidate and a governing programme. We acted responsibly and put forward a person whom I believe you also appreciate. Here in Strasbourg and Brussels, Siegfried Muresan is highly respected. We also proposed a governing programme containing concrete measures. You will find 372 priorities for government action in it. That is why, in the next stage, we want Mr Luca Niculescu to be surrounded by a working team and a governing programme team in which the direction established by the National Liberal Party over the past year remains visible," Falca explained.

Prime minister-designate Luca Niculescu stressed on Tuesday that the consensus built around Romania's accession process to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) showed that political parties can work together on major national goals despite their differences.

"Over the past four years, the OECD accession process has already meant more than 100 reforms for Romania. I want this work to continue and become one of the foundations of the governing programme. Not because the OECD recommends it, but because these are good ideas for Romania, evaluated and tested in some of the world's most successful economies," Niculescu wrote on Facebook.

He added that the OECD accession effort had also demonstrated the value of political consensus.

"Political parties were able to support together an important objective for Romania, beyond their natural differences. That consensus mattered enormously. I hope we can find the same openness now around a realistic programme built on what unites us. I am open to dialogue and respect good ideas regardless of where they come from," the prime minister-designate said.

President Nicusor Dan nominated Luca Niculescu for the position of prime minister on Monday evening following consultations with parliamentary parties and political groups.
