Romania's usable natural gas production in the first six months of 2025 was 3.731 million tonnes of oil equivalent (toe), 71,800 toe lower than in the same period last year (a decrease of 1.9%), according to data the National Institute of Statistics (INS) centralised.

On the other hand, in the January-June period of this year, natural gas imports increased 52.6% (an additional 439,900 toe) compared to the first half of 2024, reaching 1.275 million toe, said Agerpres.

According to estimates by the National Strategy and Prognosis Commission (CNSP), natural gas production is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 1.7% until 2027. Thus, in the latest Energy Balance Prognosis, natural gas production for 2025 is estimated at 7.79 million toe (up 1.5%), for 2026 at 7.907 million toe (up 1.5%), and for 2027 at 8.176 million toe (up 3.4%).

Regarding imports, a downward trend is expected, with a more pronounced decline projected for 2027 (down 6%), in line with increased production as new capacities will begin to function, while also taking into account gas transmission to external markets.

For 2025, CNSP estimates natural gas imports of 2.211 million toe (down 7.6%), for 2026 imports of 2.150 million toe (down 2.7%), and for 2027 imports of 2.022 million toe (down 6%).
