President Nicusor Dan said that the attack at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner was not only an act of aggression against US President Donald Trump and his team, but also an attack on democracy.
"Romania stands firmly with the United States today. (...) We are relieved that the president, the First Lady and all present are safe. The swift action of law enforcement officers reflects the strength of American institutions," Nicusor Dan wrote on Sunday on the platform X.
The Romanian president also said that "political violence has no place in our societies" and stressed that Romania, as a NATO ally and a friendly country, is fully in solidarity with the American people.
US President Donald Trump and other senior officials were rushed out of the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Saturday evening by Secret Service agents after a man opened fire with a rifle at security personnel. The suspect, whom Trump described as a "sick individual", was arrested, according to international news agencies.
