PM Ciuca: 'Remembering Holocaust, a permanent duty'

Nicolae Ciucă

Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca said on Thursday, on the occasion of the concert in the memory of the Holocaust, organized by the Bucharest National Opera, that remembering the Holocaust represents a permanent duty and reaffirmed the Government's firm and unconditional commitment in regards to preventing and countering anti-Semitism, xenophobia, hate speech and all forms of political or symbolic violence.

"Tonight, here, in Bucharest, around the day of Yom HaShoah, we painfully and compassionately remember the millions of Holocaust victims, killed by Nazis and their collaborators. The Holocaust was the greatest tragedy of humanity in the entire global history, and the memory of the victims of Yom HaShoah always creates a strong bond with today's State of Israel, with the inheritance of the memory of the Jewish people, of Jewish diaspora and the entire world that always deplores the suffering and victims of the Holocaust. The words of Elie Wiesel will echo for eternity: Why so many citizens have betrayed humanity, theirs and ours, choosing to persecute, to torment and to kill men, women and innocent, defenseless children?. That is why, we must constantly reaffirm our responsibility as citizens, today and always, of never forgetting the horrors and crimes of the Holocaust. This duty is essential for honoring the victims, of permanently condemning the acts of the assassins and their accomplices, but also to lay the foundation of a reconciliation built on truth and remembrance," the PM said in his message.

Nicolae Ciuca also highlights that Yom HaShoah is about victory and survival, Agerpres.ro informs.

In context, he also points that today we cannot remain silent in front of the horrors that are being committed far away from us and certainly of those happening right across the border, referring to the "recent terrorist attacks in Israel, where innocent people were barbarically killed, the illegal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation, the war crimes and crimes against humanity that happen daily by the Russian forces, killing Holocaust survivors there or the attacks on the Holocaust symbols".

The head of the Executive reminds that Romania, who took responsibility two decades ago in its participation in the Holocaust during the Second World War, is today a stable and democratic nation that fights for the values of liberty, alongside our European and transatlantic partners.

"That is why, it is my duty, as Prime Minister, to reaffirm the Romanian Government's firm and unconditional commitment in regards to preventing and countering anti-Semitism, xenophobia, hate speech and all forms of political or symbolic violence," the PM said.

At the end of the message, he congratulated the cultural and civic memorial initiative of the Bucharest National Opera House and the Embassy of Israel.
