President Nicusor Dan says that Romania must also build institutions capable of attracting, retaining and supporting top-level scientific talent.
'Only in this way can our country become more than just a beneficiary of technological progress, and instead become one of the places where it is produced - in essential fields such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, energy, cybersecurity, defence and the social sciences,' the head of state wrote on his Facebook page.
He had a meeting with Professor Maria Leptin, President of the European Research Council, one of the most important European institutions dedicated to supporting frontier research and scientific excellence.
The President said he discussed with Maria Leptin the future of European funding for research and innovation, in the context of preparations for the European Union's next Multiannual Financial Framework and the programme that will succeed Horizon Europe.
'For Romania, it is essential that research and innovation are treated as strategic investments in economic competitiveness, security and Europe's strategic autonomy. The European Research Council funds basic research projects across all scientific fields, with scientific excellence as its sole criterion. This principle must be maintained and strengthened in order to fully harness the potential of research and Romania's valuable human resources,' Nicusor Dan stressed.
