Executive Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), Senator Niculae Badalau, on Thursday told a press conference that works at a new Danube bridge might start in 2018 in Giurgiu, with Chinese companies carrying out the project.

"I think that at the end of next year works at a new modern railway bridge across the Danube will start at Giurgiu, with Chinese companies working on the project. I don't know how long it will take, but I am satisfied that it will be fast - if the Chinese do it. The Chinese plan investing in Europe and particularly in Romania, where they have a strong community. At their latest meeting, the Romanian and Bulgarian Prime Ministers discussed this subject and the Bulgarian Premier agrees with the project. The idea emerged following talks with the Chinese and it's good they accepted and I convinced the government the bridge should cross the river at Giurgiu," Badalau said, mentioning that this infrastructure project will provide a major connection between Balkan states and Central Europe, and that the plan also includes a Maglev train project based on a China-developed concept.
