Social Democratic Party (PSD) President Sorin Grindeanu believes that time has come to stop this "steamroller of foolish economic decisions," warning that "if a Government is not for the people, then it will no longer exist at all."
"After months of austerity, sacrifices, absurd taxes and increased prices, the Statistics has officially confirmed what millions of Romanians already feel in their pockets: we are not moving in the right direction with an economy which has entered a technical recession. It is a painful reality and a disgrace for the entire governing coalition, including for us. Yes, the PSD is part of the Government and we take our share of responsibility. We haven't always managed to find the right means to stop these economic and social amputations which hit every Romanian and every Romanian company," Grindeanu wrote on his Facebook page.
According to him, a battle was fought against "accountants of social suffering."
"Instead of fighting the populists who would sell Romania for nothing in a single second, we ended up fighting bayonet-style with some accountants of social suffering to at least partly stop the blunt cuts. We did what we could with 22 percent in Parliament. The only left-wing party in a coalition dominated by the right-wing. Without the PSD, the VAT would have been 24 percent today, the basic food products would no longer be capped, the minimum wage would not have increased, all investments would have been stopped, tens of thousands of jobs would have been lost, the salaries of doctors and other essential categories would have been cut, agricultural subsidies would have been halted, the tax on multinationals would have been eliminated and the gas price cap would have been lifted. We managed to prevent all these things. I regret, however, that we did not succeed in stopping many of the reckless decisions that turned into experiments conducted on the backs of the people," Grindeanu wrote on Facebook.
He added that the solution lies in the solidarity measures "which include clear provisions for pensioners, mothers, veterans and children with disabilities."
"Certainly, there is a main culprit for the wrong direction in which we were pushed. Stubbornness taken to the extreme, the fierce resistance to any rational argument, the constant obsession for image and personal calculations instead of real dialogue and solid economic solutions. This is the true assessment after six months in office. However, there is a collective fault. And Romanians are not interested in excuses and justifications. They only see the result: after unimaginable sacrifices, Romania is in recession. At this pace and especially in this direction we cannot continue. Everything that has gone wrong must be corrected urgently. Romanians are not some names who 'carry expenses' in a table, nor 'welfare recipients' or 'budget issues'. They are grandparents, parents, children and young people who depend on us. Time has come to stop this steamroller of foolish economic decisions. We must put the economy first and abandon the model of mindless tax increases and 'no exceptions'," the PSD leader underscored.
Grindeanu added that "time has come to finally implement the Economic Recovery Programme, which the PSD has been talking about for five months."
"There is a need of real dialogue in the coalition, not unilaterally imposed decisions. Do you understand, Mr Prime Minister, that if a Government is not for the people, then it will no longer exist at all!," the PSD leader concluded.
Romania's economy increased by 0.6 percent in 2025, however the Gross Domestic Product was 1.9 percent lower in the fourth quarter compared with the third quarter of 2025, according to preliminary data published on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
This is the second consecutive quarter in which the economy has contracted, indicating entry into a technical recession.
