Social Democratic Party (PSD) interim President Sorin Grindeanu said on Friday in Deva that the request for Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan to come before Parliament was made in the context in which Romania needs a strategy to maintain its security level, following the US announcement of downsizing troops deployed in our country.
"For the past three days, we have a situation in Romania. Our strategic partner, the United States of America, announced it is downsizing troops deployed in our country. This means Romania needs to have a strategy to maintain its security. For three days, the Government has remained silent. No one has come out to explain Romania's strategy from this perspective, of security for the upcoming period given the new context. I, Soin Grindeanu, I am not interested in hearing Bolojan, Mosteanu, or Toiu in Parliament. I believe that all of us Romanians are interested in knowing what the country's plan is from this perspective and what the Romanian Government proposes for the next period in order to maintain the same level of security, because we are, after all, a country on the border of conflict," the PSD leader said.
Asked what he would do if the Prime Minister shall not respond to the invitation to appear before Parliament, the PSD leader said the PM should "come for the Romanians" and provide the necessary explanations.
"I invited him not for me.(...) I invited him for the Romanians, to explain Romanians what is the public policy of the Government in this area, which concerns national security," Grindeanu showed.
He added that he learned about the downsizing of US military troops from the press and that the topic had not been discussed within the coalition.
"The Prime Minister, even as the head of a coalition - now with four parties plus the minority group, I believe that he must show respect for Parliament. Not for the parties that make up a majority or not. And the respect for Parliament also means respect for his own citizens. (...) This is the reason for which I invited the Prime Minister, not for anything else, but to inform Romanians of the situation," Sorin Grindeanu concluded.
The interim president of the PSD attended on Friday in Deva the Extraordinary Conference of the Hunedoara PSD county branch, held ahead of the party congress. The organisation regarded as the strongest in Banat and Transylvania, will be represented at the event by 79 delegates.
