Romania lining up six swimmers for World Aquatics Championships Singapore 2025

Romania is lining up six athletes, led by Olympic champion David Popovici, for the 2025 edition of the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, July 11 - August 3.

In swimming, scheduled between July 27 and August 3, Romania has two representatives, David Popovici and Denis Popescu, agerpres reports.

Popovici, who recently set the second fastest time in history in the men's100 m freestyle, will compete in Singapore in the 50 m freestyle, 100 m freestyle and 200 m freestyle, while Popescu will start in the men's 50 and 100 m backstroke, and in the men's 50 and 100 m butterfly. They will make the trip to Singapore on July 20.

Recently, at the European Under-23 Championships in Samorin, Slovakia, Popovici won gold in the 200 m freestyle and 100 m freestyle, with a new European senior record, and bronze in the 50 m freestyle. Denis-Laurean Popescu won gold in the 100 m butterfly and bronze in the 50 m butterfly.

In the diving events, Angelica Muscalu will compete in the women's10 m platform, while Alexandru Avasiloaie will start on the men's 1 m and 3 m platform. The diving events are scheduled between July 26 and August 3.

In the high diving events, scheduled between July 24 and 27, there are two Romanians with a chance at medals: Constantin Popovici, world champion in 2023 and Catalin Preda, world vice-champion in 2023 and world bronze medallist in 2024.

The Romanian polo team, which has been assigned to Group A, will also compete, playing Italy (July 12), South Africa (July 14) and Serbia (July 16).

At the 2024 World Cup in Doha, Romania's polo team ranked 10th.
