Thousands of people attended a daytime fireworks display in the colours of the Romanian red-yellow-blue flag in Alba Iulia on Thursday, one of the highlights of the Romanian National Day events prepared by the organisers.
Called "The tricolour in the sky," the fireworks were highly appreciated by the people. It took place immediately after the end of a Te-deum service in the courtyard of the National Union Cathedral by priests led by Archbishop Irineu.
In his speech, the Christian Orthodox archbishop of Alba Iulia mentioned the historical moment of December 1, 1918, when, "from the common people to the priests, everyone was driven by the great thought and the holy will to establish here Greater Romania, to give eternal fruition to a longing that had guided our souls for centuries."
He added that the creation of Greater Romania in 1918 is the fulfilment of a centuries-old dream of the Romanians to be together from the province of Banat to the Nistru.
"It is appropriate to bring our offering of gratitude to all those who, in troubled times, sacrificed themselves for the freedom and unity of the Romanian nation. Their lives are the foundation stones on which the noble edifice of today's Romania stands. May their example be a source of virtue and humanity to us," said Irineu.
Thousands of people were in Alba Iulia on Thursday, December 1, Romania's National Day, for the special events, among them many parents with children coming from all over the country.
The participants enjoyed a beautiful weather, with positive temperatures, at least until noon, being perhaps the warmest December 1 in recent years there. AGERPRES
