More than 1,000 pieces of equipment and four regional data centres have been implemented in the Government Private Cloud, a project coordinated by the Authority for the Digitalisation of Romania (ADR).
According to a press release from Metaminds, the company that, together with Trencadis Corp, implemented the Internal Cloud component, the process involved a team of dozens of engineers and specialists who worked in coordination with experts from the Special Telecommunications Service (STS) to integrate and operationalise the infrastructure nationwide.
The new infrastructure includes four regional data centres, 570 servers, more than 90 storage systems and around 340 networking devices.
"The Government Private Cloud, the most extensive critical digital infrastructure developed in Romania, is entering the operational stage at national level and will represent the technical foundation for the states digital public services. The implementation involved building an Internal Cloud infrastructure distributed across four data centres - Bucharest, Timis, Brasov and Sibiu - to ensure operational continuity nationwide. The system is based on 570 server type devices for processing, storage, backup and mission critical functions, 91 block, file and object storage systems, as well as more than 340 networking devices. At software level, the platform integrates automation and management solutions that enable the development and operation of digital services in a secure and scalable framework suitable for critical state infrastructure," the press release said.
By June this year, at least 30 IT and communications applications and systems used to deliver government digital services will be migrated to the cloud. This will allow institutions to exchange data more efficiently, enabling citizens to access documents and services online more easily, quickly and securely.
"For the administration, the Government Private Cloud will optimise costs by eliminating fragmented IT systems and will provide a secure and scalable framework for the development and operation of digital services at national level," the cited source notes.
The implementation of the Government Private Cloud is carried out by ADR as beneficiary, partner and contracting authority responsible for coordinating the project and administering the Dedicated Cloud component, in partnership with STS - the technical and security administrator of the internal component of the Government Private Cloud - and the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI).
STS will manage the core infrastructure and the fundamental components of the internal Government Private Cloud - Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS). Through IaaS, public institutions will benefit from virtualised IT resources - servers, storage and networking - in a secure and scalable environment.
At the same time, PaaS provides standardised platforms for developing, testing and running the Romanian states IT applications, facilitating interoperability and reducing the time required to implement digital services.
The Internal Cloud component is implemented by the Metaminds and Trencadis Corp consortium as the foundation of a secure, interoperable and scalable cloud infrastructure for the states IT systems.
