Romania's Jianu progresses to Valencia Open men's singles R 16

Romanian tennis player Filip Cristian Jianu on Tuesday advanced to the round of 16 of the Valencia Open challenger tournament, prize money EUR 181,250, after defeating compatriot Cezar Cretu 6-1 3-6 6-4.

Jianu,24, world number 280, prevailed in two hours and 36 minutes over qualifier Cretu.

Jianu also defeated Cretu, 24, world number 427, in the semifinals of the M15 Antalya 2024, 6-2 7-6 (7/3).

For his performance in Valencia, Jianu won EUR 3,055 and 8 ATP singles points, and in the round of 16 he will play lucky loser Christoph Negritu of Germany, victorious against Czech Vit Kopriva, second seed, 6-4 6-2.

Jianu prevailed in both meets so far with Negritu, 31, world number 318, in 2019.

Cretu got EUR 1,890 and 5 ATP singles points.

In the first round of men's doubles, Victor Cornea and Spaniard Bruno Pujol Navarro were defeated in the first round by the Spanish duo Sergio Martos Gornes/David Vega Hernandez, 5-7 6-4 10-8.
