Senate President Mircea Abrudean said on Monday, in reference to the explosion at the block of flats in Bucharest's District 5, that if the current legal framework proves to be insufficiently robust or effective, it will have to be amended to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

"Certainly, if the ongoing investigation finds that the current legal framework is not effective or robust enough, the law will need to be amended. I believe we must focus on identifying and resolving what needs to be fixed in order to prevent such tragedies, and by no means should this tragedy, which has affected so many people, be politicised or exploited in any way," Abrudean said when asked about the explosion in the Rahova block, the irregularities found, and whether the law should be amended to impose harsher penalties.

Three people died following the explosion in the block of flats in Bucharest's District 5, on Friday morning. Twenty others were injured, fifteen of whom were taken to hospital.
