Senate's President Calin Popescu-Tariceanu reiterated on Thursday Romania's support for Serbia's European integration, during the meeting with Serbia's President Aleksandar Vucic who is paying an official visit in Bucharest, reads a press release of the Senate sent to Agerpres.
Calin Popescu-Tariceanu and Aleksandar Vucic discussed about aspects of the bilateral cooperation, Serbia's European path and the perspectives for an enhanced EU commitment for the Western Balkans, but also about recent developments in the region and the importance that both states grant the protection of national minorities as democratisation factor with a significant impact on regional stability, the quoted source specifies.
Calin Popescu-Tariceanu underscored that in "Serbia's accession to the EU process, Romania carefully monitors the bilateral aspects related to the observance, at the standards adopted by the EU member states, of the rights of people belonging to national minorities."
In this respect, he voiced the desire for the Serbian part to adopt, in an inclusive manner, the amendments to the key legislation and the implementation of the envisaged measures, such as to put at disposal school manuals, to ensure better access to media in the languages of the national minorities and the adequate participation of national minorities in the public sphere, reads the release. A first step in solving these aspects would be to resume the works of the mixed Romanian-Serbian intergovernmental Committee regarding the situation of national minorities which has not reunited since 2013. According to the release, common economic interest domains were reviewed during the talks, the interconnection of the transport and energy networks being considered highly important strategic projects for the development of the entire region.
