The municipality of Sighisoara, in partnership with the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba to Romania, will host the cultural event "El Dia de la Cultura" (Cuban Culture Day) on Friday, 16 October, aimed at bringing the music, art and traditions of the country directly to the local community and tourists.
The main events will begin at 17:00 in the Citadel Square, Sighisoara Mayor Ioan Iulian Sirbu announced.
"In collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba to Romania, we will bring 'El Dia de la Cultura' to Sighisoara on 16 October. Sighisoara and Havana are two cities thousands of kilometres apart, but they have something important in common: both are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Last year, together with the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba to Romania, we held an exhibition that brought Cuban culture closer to us. This year we are continuing this collaboration and taking it a step further, so that Sighisoara residents and the tourists who visit us can discover Cuban music and culture right here, in the heart of the Citadel. It is an event about culture, music and the joy of discovering something new here in our city," Mayor Ioan Iulian Sirbu said in a Facebook post.
This summer, on the occasion of the 31st edition of the "Sighisoara Medievala" Festival, Sighisoara City Hall revived the "Havana" photography exhibition, organised in collaboration with the diplomatic mission in Bucharest. The exhibition brings together works by renowned Cuban photographers, including Sonia Almaguer Darna and Claudia Corales, capturing the architectural essence and everyday charm of the Cuban capital.
Internationally, "El Dia de la Cultura Cubana" is officially celebrated on 20 October, marking the creation of the Cuban national anthem, "La Bayamesa," in 1868.
Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to Romania Alexander Valentin Rodriguez Salazar is a fan of Sighisoara and also attended the 31st edition of the "Sighisoara Medievala" Festival, on which occasion he expressed his hope that this tradition "will be preserved forever."
