Romanian tennis player Sorana Cirstea qualified for the round of 16 at the WTA 250 tournament in Cleveland (Ohio), which has total prize money of 275,094 USD, on Monday, after defeating Japan's Moyuka Uchijima 6-4, 6-1.
Cirstea (35 years old, WTA's 138th), who came through the qualifiers, secured the win after one hour and 18 minutes of play.
Uchijima (24 years old, WTA's 89th) committed no fewer than 8 double faults in this match.
In another first-round match, Gabriela Ruse (27 years old, WTA's 66th) was defeated by American Hailey Baptiste (23 years old, WTA's 51st), the eighth seed, 6-2, 7-6 (7/2), after one hour and 33 minutes.
Baptiste also won their first encounter, in 2022, in the first round at Charleston, 6-3, 6-0.
Cirstea secured a cheque for 4,470 dollars and 49 WTA points, and in the round of 16 she will face the winner between Frenchwoman Lois Boisson, the fifth seed, and Swiss player Jil Teichmann.
Ruse leaves the tournament with one point and 3,110 USD.
