PSD president Sorin Grindeanu declared on Wednesday, after the National Political Bureau meeting, that the party will go to the Cotroceni consultations with a fairly broad mandate. The social democrats want to form a clear majority and exclude both an alliance with AUR and supporting a new mandate as prime minister for Ilie Bolojan.
Asked what a stable government looks like from the PSD perspective, Grindeanu replied that it would be one with a clear majority, not one of circumstances.
"The mandate we are going with is quite broad, in the sense that we have a few, two or three things that we cannot ignore. 1: We are not forming a majority with AUR, which is what I said before the motion. There is no option to support the PSD, it is not even constitutional, in fact, with Ilie Bolojan as prime minister, second. And we will not support any minority government with PNL, UDMR and so on," declared Sorin Grindeanu.
He mentioned that one of the options considered by the party is the designation of a prime minister from the PSD, with the decision to be established within the party's internal structures. Asked if he himself could be the proposal for the position of prime minister, the social democrat leader said that he did not rule out this possibility, but the final decision belongs to his colleagues.
"I told you earlier that we have a fairly broad mandate, except for the two or three things that we cannot ignore. This also means a variant that could lead to a PSD prime minister. A PSD prime minister designated by the Social Democratic Party in statutory forums. But if it's me, the PSD president, and my colleagues will decide on that, I don't rule it out," Grindeanu pointed out.
As to the possibility of a coalition without USR, Grindeanu said: "Without USR, it's possible, for sure."
Asked whether he was negotiating with PNL parliamentarians to support a possible majority formed by PSD, UDMR and the minority group, Sorin Grindeanu denied the existence of such discussions and said that he did not intend to initiate them.
"I have not had any discussions and I do not intend to have any. If I demand respect from the other actors on the political scene, I cannot treat the other parties with disrespect. Even if I have not received the same respect from the others, I will not set a negative example. And no, I have no discussions of this type," Grindeanu said.
Referring to the option of a technocratic government, Grindeanu specified that PSD does not prefer it, but does not exclude a technocratic prime minister with political ministers.
"It depends on who that technocrat is. Because it is important, considering the experience of the 10 months so far, the profile that this prime minister has is also important. I made a profile form, I think a week ago or even better, saying that I would like to have a prime minister with an economic profile and a prime minister who can realize his position, that is, a prime minister of a coalition, not a prime minister of a part of the coalition, as Ilie Bolojan was in these 10 months. That is why I tell you, I do not exclude it, it is a better option than a technocratic government, it is more assumed, having political ministers, having political support, but it depends on the person, obviously", said Sorin Grindeanu.
The PSD leader continued his criticism of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, whom he considers responsible for the deterioration of the economic situation. He said that Romania has the highest inflation in the European Union and one of the weakest economic developments in the region.
Grindeanu said that the PSD wants to quickly identify a stable political solution and launched an appeal to the other parties to find a governing formula "without Ilie Bolojan".
