Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Sorin Grindeanu said on Tuesday that that it would be "difficult" to have a Government with full powers by 15 August, but after that date "we can become more optimistic" about having such a Government.
"I said that by 15 August it would be difficult to have a fully empowered Government. After 15 August, I believe we can become more optimistic about having this Government," Grindeanu said at the Palace of Parliament.
He added that he is holding negotiations in an attempt to secure a parliamentary majority.
Asked how he would manage to convince President Nicusor Dan to nominate him as Prime Minister, Grindeanu replied: "The Social Democratic Party went to the latest consultations and to the first ones, after the dismissal of the Bolojan Government, with a very clear proposal. That we are taking responsibility for governing, that we have a prime ministerial candidate, myself, and that we have no hesitation whatsoever in this regard. We will say the same thing when we are called again for the next consultations. I have nothing else to add."
The Social Democratic Party (PSD) President was also asked whether he would talk to the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) representatives, given that George Simion said he would start talks with all parties to form a new executive.
"I have not seen these statements. What I did notice, however, yesterday, and this is a good thing, is that the AUR voted for PSD's proposals to unblock positions in the Health sector. The AUR also voted for the proposal to resolve the situation regarding the cadastre, that VAT [increase] from 9% to 21%. (...) That is what I noticed. The rest, from intentions to actually having talks, are steps. But what is certain is that Romania needs a stable Government. This is something that, in my view, no one can dispute," Grindeanu underscored.
