Two-thirds of the consumption needed for public lighting in the western city of Timisoara will be covered by the energy provided by a future solar park that will be built on 20 hectares of land in the southern part of the city.

Timisoara City Hall has launched the tender procedure for the technical design and execution services of the park, with the investment of RON 32 million to be financed from the Modernisation Fund managed by the Ministry of Energy, and will produce almost 8 GWh of renewable green energy each year.

"In this complicated period, it is important to invest in green energy and in the development of our own energy production facilities. It is the first solar park in the city that will help us produce a good part of the electricity used for public lighting," Mayor Dominic Fritz announced on Monday.

The future solar park will have an installed capacity of 5.6 MW and will produce, on average, almost 7,800 MWh of green energy annually. The solar panels will be installed on a plot of land of about 20 hectares, located near the wastewater treatment plant in Freidorf. The energy generated will cover approximately two-thirds of the consumption needed for public lighting in Timisoara, which will mean a significant reduction in monthly costs, currently estimated at over RON 1.2 million.

In addition to the financial savings, the Timisoara City Hall project will also contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 4,800 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent annually.

The estimated value of the contract is over RON 32 million (VAT included), and funding is provided from the Modernisation Fund, managed by the Ministry of Energy. Companies interested in participating in the Timisoara City tender can sign up via the electronic procurement platform (EUR 1 = RON 5.09).
