Arrivals recorded at tourist accommodation establishments, including apartments and rented rooms, totalled 9.67 million people between 1 January and 31 August 2025, representing a 1.7% increase compared to the same period in 2024, according to data the National Institute of Statistics (INS) published on Tuesday.
Of the total number of arrivals during the analysed period, Romanian tourists accounted for 82.7% of those staying in accommodation facilities, while foreign tourists made up 17.3%.
Overnight stays recorded in tourist accommodation structures (including apartments and rented rooms) totalled 21.14 million in the first eight months of the year, a decrease of 1% compared to the same period in 2024.
Of the total number of overnight stays between 1 January and 31 August 2025, those by Romanian tourists represented 83.7%, while foreign tourists accounted for 16.3%.
The average length of stay during the analysed period was 2.2 days for Romanian tourists and 2.1 days for foreign tourists.
The net occupancy rate of tourist accommodation places in the period 1 January - 31 August 2025 was 30.9% across all types of tourist accommodation (including apartments and rented rooms), a decrease of 0.9 percentage points compared to the same period in 2024.
By county, in the first eight months of this year, the highest number of tourist arrivals at accommodation establishments (including apartments and rented rooms) was recorded in: Constanta (1.6 million people), Bucharest Municipality (1.29 million people), Brasov (924,000 people).
The highest number of overnight stays was also recorded in: Constanta (4.95 million), Bucharest (2.59 million), Brasov (1.76 million).
By country of origin, the most foreign tourist arrivals in accommodation establishments (including apartments and rented rooms) between 1 January and 31 August 2025 came from: Germany (163,700 people), Italy (142,900 people), Israel (105,600 people).
In August 2025, compared to August 2024, both arrivals and overnight stays in tourist accommodation facilities (including apartments and rented rooms) decreased by 4.6% and 4.8%, respectively.
Arrivals in August 2025 totalled 2.07 million people, down 4.6% compared to August 2024. Of this total, Romanian tourists accounted for 85.6%, while foreign tourists made up 14.4%.
Overnight stays in August 2025 reached 5.09 million, a 4.8% drop compared to August 2024. Romanian tourists accounted for 88.6% of these, while foreign tourists made up 11.4%.
The average length of stay in August 2025 was 2.5 days for Romanian tourists and 1.9 days for foreign tourists.
The net occupancy rate of tourist accommodation places in August 2025 was 43.5%, a decrease of 3.1 percentage points compared to August 2024.
