The Rector of the 'George Emil Palade' University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Sciences and Technology (UMFST) in Targu Mures, Professor Dr. Leonard Azamfirei, announced on Wednesday that the university's partnership with Gulf Medical University (GMU) in the United Arab Emirates is entering a new stage with the launch of Thumbay Medicity Dubai.

"From Ajman to Dubai: the UMFST - GMU partnership enters a new stage, expanding into AI, healthcare management and research and development. A new chapter opens in the increasingly solid cooperation between UMFST and Gulf Medical University, with the Ajman-based partnership now extending to Dubai following the launch of Thumbay Medicity Dubai in Al Qusais. With a projected capacity of 3,000 students, nearly 1,000 new jobs and a floating population of around 6,000 people, the new Medicity represents more than infrastructure. It signals the scale and next phase of an academic health system developed in the UAE, now undergoing regional and global expansion," Azamfirei wrote on Facebook.

As a strategic academic partner of Thumbay Group and GMU, UMFST participated in the official inauguration of Thumbay Medicity Dubai, described as a landmark investment designed as a "city within a city", integrating medical education, advanced clinical care and research into a single ecosystem.

Azamfirei said he held working discussions with the group's founder, Dr. Thumbay Moideen, GMU Chancellor Prof. Manda Venkatramana and the university's management team, focusing on expanding cooperation in this new phase of development. The talks aimed to redefine and deepen the partnership in line with GMU's expansion in Dubai.

The new stage of collaboration will focus on five main directions, including the expansion of UMFST's academic presence to the Dubai campus through increased involvement in teaching, joint programs and institutional initiatives.

A central pillar will be the structured development of AI-driven approaches in healthcare and digital medical education, with the goal of creating future-oriented, clinically relevant and integrated programs. The partnership will also include applied modules in healthcare management linked directly to the clinical ecosystem of Thumbay hospitals, bridging managerial training with real operational environments.

The two institutions will develop integrated academic pathways to facilitate cross-border mobility, shared curricula and joint certifications. Medical research and development will also be strengthened through joint projects, shared infrastructure and complementary capabilities across campuses.

In addition, medical research and development will be strengthened through joint projects, shared infrastructure and leveraging the complementary capabilities of the campuses.

"The Ajman campus provided the academic foundation; Dubai is now amplifying it - geographically, academically and strategically. The UMFST - GMU partnership is not starting from scratch: it is already active and productive, and the launch of Thumbay Medicity Dubai marks its entry into an expanded regional configuration. As medical education evolves toward interdisciplinary, technology-based and ecosystem-based models, this consolidated collaboration positions both institutions at the intersection of education, healthcare delivery, AI innovation and research, aligned with the partners' broader vision of becoming a global benchmark in medical excellence and academic innovation. From Ajman to Dubai, the partnership grows not only in size, but in scope, relevance and impact," the Rector of UMFST Targu Mures also noted.
