Save Romania Union (USR) Senate leader Sorin Sipos on Monday expressed hope that the Muresan government would receive Parliament's confidence vote early next week, announcing a "more flexible" position by his party, which is now open to negotiations with the Social Democratic Party (PSD).
"It is very important that anything related to reform should be a priority. We have a package of justice-related initiatives in Parliament and this package will certainly also be included in the governing programme. We will certainly finalise this governing programme tomorrow and negotiations will take place to secure the votes needed for the Siegfried Muresan government to pass. First and foremost, Mr Siegfried Muresan will conduct these negotiations (...) including with the PSD. If PSD genuinely wants us to emerge from this crisis and overcome the problems we are seeing, which they themselves have complained about, including the need for a budget revision, then they certainly need to provide this vote. They have to decide whether they are moving towards a pro-European government or remaining in the same coalition they currently have with AUR [the Alliance for the Union of Romanians]. We are entering these consultations with optimism," Sipos said at Parliament, potrivit Agerpres.
He recalled that PSD and AUR together hold around 47% of the seats in Parliament. "Many MPs, looking both at the governing programme and at the possibility of snap elections, will think very carefully, and we nevertheless expect them to vote for this government," the USR senator added.
"This is a government that could be discussed with PSD, including the possibility of sharing this period in government and proceeding with a rotation arrangement, and that represents a more flexible position on our part. We need to emerge from this political crisis now, and it is natural for the ministers who are already in office to continue with their governing programme. It is the simplest option, and I am also thinking of what Mr Grindeanu said when he left Cotroceni Palace: 'the country needs stability'. This is one way of ensuring the country's stability and bringing this political crisis to an end," Sorin Sipos explained.
The USR Senate leader stressed that the nearly finalised governing programme would not include tax increases and that the budget should be rebalanced through "reducing state expenditure".
"Once again, we stress the need to reduce state expenditure and reform state-owned companies. All these reforms are absolutely necessary and form part of the fiscal and economic rebalancing that Romania needs at this time. It is a thoroughly reform-oriented programme, one that looks at the country's economic needs, reducing state expenditure and problems in the justice system. There needs to be greater clarity regarding the administration of justice and faster decisions from the courts, delivered in a transparent, clear and fair manner," Sipos said.
