The President of the Romanian Chess Federation, Vlad Ardeleanu, stated, on Thursday, in a press conference, that the sport was aided by the pandemic period, especially in the online environment, where 20,000 matches between Romanian players take place daily.
"The Romanian Chess Federation is the third sports movement in Romania when looking at registered players. The Romanian Chess Federation has 20,000 players registered, the first place being taken by football, and second taken by basketball, while the 4th and 5th spots have less than 10,000 players registered. Then we can say that the top three mass sports in Romania are football, basketball and chess. It's interesting that an increase in the sporting phenomenon is very noticeable in the case of chess and especially in the past years. This pandemic period helped chess more than other sports, because chess can be practiced online and then the increases were very important in this area. I would like to mention some figures regarding the state of the chess phenomenon on the internet level, where we have 20,000 matches that are played daily with Romanian players. It's an extraordinary figure, we have over 450,000 accounts of Romanian players in chess applications and we have over 150,000 active players involved in the game. It's a mass phenomenon," said Ardeleanu.
The best Romanian chess players at the current time, Bogdan Deac and Constantin Lupulescu, have received from the Romanian Chess Federation a check worth 40,000 euro, which will help them train at the highest level.
The President of the Romanian Chess Federation mentioned that next year Romania will host in Bucharest a new stage of the Grand Chess Tour: "Next year we will have a new stage of the Grand Chess Tour in Bucharest, an event at the highest level of world chess, in the May 3-15 period. And we will have five stages of the Grand Prix in next year's calendar as well as a final in Bucharest. For these stages we have prizes worth 15,000 euro, and in the final we will have a prize fund of 25,000 euro."
During the press conference, Gabriel Petrescu, Vicepresident of the Superbet Foundation handed to the President of the Chess Federation a check worth 240,000 euro as sponsorship.
