Volunteers from eight countries collected, at the end of last week, more than 170 waste bags during a beach cleanup activity of the Black Sea beach in the town of Sulina, and the waste was mapped to find their source, the National Institute for Research and Development of the Danube Delta (INCDDD) announced Tuesday, in a press release, informs Agerpres.ro.

The action took place in the framework of the Danube Delta Summer School, organized by INCDDD in collaboration with the International Association for Danube Research (IAD) and brought together more than 30 participants, students and experts from eight countries: Austria, Germany, Slovakia, Serbia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Ukraine.

"This initiative, which is part of #EUBeachCleanUp, was not only a practical action, but also a way for students and experts to reconsider nature, connect with the environment and deepen their knowledge of the fragile ecosystems they want to protect," the INCDDD press release states.

During the greening action carried out in collaboration with the Administration of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve and the regional waste collection operator, despite the heavy rain, the group of volunteers collected more than 170 waste bags containing 60 kilograms of metal.

"What made this greening event particularly impactful was the integration of modern technology - some of the collected waste was mapped using a computerized waste mapping application and the collected data will be used in future scientific articles, contributing to ongoing research on pollution in the Danube Delta," the release further reads.
