Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said he trusts the vote of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova in the parliamentary elections of September 28.

Romania does not want "a proxy" leading the Republic of Moldova, Bolojan told Euronews on Thursday, after being asked what would happen if the parliament in Chisinau were dominated by pro-Russian politicians.

"All these years, we have supported the Republic of Moldova in safeguarding its sovereignty and in ensuring the conditions for Moldovans to decide for themselves who should govern their country. Obviously, for Romania, we do not wish to see a proxy leading Moldova — that is perfectly clear. I also believe that the European path, the one it has followed in recent years, is the path toward development, because it is a proven path, and I trust the vote of the Romanians in Bessarabia," Ilie Bolojan said.

As for Romania, the prime minister stated that all institutions involved in combating hybrid warfare and disinformation must fulfill their responsibilities.

At the same time, the head of government emphasized that Romanian authorities must regain the trust of the citizens.

"When people lose confidence in a government, for instance, or in what is happening in the country, in the direction the country is heading, you realize that any kind of news — even if it has no factual basis — spreads very easily. Any kind of division, any kind of disinformation of this sort, basically falls on fertile ground. We must win back people's trust, clearly show what we can deliver in governance, that we govern as correctly as possible under the circumstances, that we work for the people, that we correct the injustices accumulated over these years, and that we create conditions for development," Ilie Bolojan added.
