World Bank remains strategic partner in financing essential projects for sustainable development (EnvironmentMin Fechet)

Representatives of the Ministry of Environment met on Tuesday with those of the World Bank, with the discussions aiming at strengthening the capacity to create and improve air quality monitoring programs at the national level and at ways to prevent wildfires and solutions on Romania's vulnerability to floods and drought.

"Romania is on an ambitious path towards sustainability, and environmental sector reforms require solid investments and strong partnerships, and the World Bank has been and remains a strategic partner in the development of public policies and in financing essential projects for the sustainable development of our country. Today's discussions [on Tuesday] are essential to identify the most efficient mechanisms for financing and implementing green projects, whether we are talking about reducing carbon emissions, waste management, afforestation, biodiversity protection or the transition to a circular economy. We need innovative and sustainable solutions, and the World Bank's expertise offers us valuable support in this regard. In the coming period, we want to strengthen our collaboration and accelerate the implementation of environmental projects, for the benefit of communities and future generations", the Waters and Forestry Minister Mircea Fechet said, according to a press release from the institution.

The discussions also focused on relevant aspects on strengthening the capacity to create and improve air quality monitoring programs at the national level, by implementing programs at the local level, wildfires and ways to prevent them, at the level of the whole of Europe, solutions related to Romania's vulnerability to floods and droughts, aspects concerning the security and resilience of water resources.

The "GEF WATER MAP" project, initiated in September 2024 and focused on the efficient management of water resources, was also discussed. The main goal is to improve water management and implement sustainable practices in this field, thus contributing to protecting the environment and ensuring water resources for communities.

The "Integrated Nutrient Pollution Control" Project and the "Pollution Prevention and Reduction in Rural Areas", launched in April 2023, were also discussed, whose main objective is to prevent and reduce, in particular, pollution with nitrates, ammonia, pesticides and antibiotics. The project has two major components: strengthening the institutional capacity of public entities to monitor pollution in agriculture and disseminating knowledge to farmers on reducing agricultural pollution.

The meeting was followed by technical discussions on projects carried out in partnership with the World Bank.

The meeting was also attended by Cristian Valer Beseni, Secretary of State, and Avram Alexandru, Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, and from the World Bank, Anna Akhalkatsi, Country Director for European Countries, Yasser El-Gammal, Country Manager and Gayane Minasyan, Practice Manager for Environment for Europe and Central Asia, and other representatives who have responsibilities in the areas of collaboration between the two institutions.
