A Turkish-flagged tourist boat with more than 60 clandestine migrants on board was intercepted on Monday night by the Romanian Coast Guard at about 17 nautical miles off Constanta and escorted to Constanta Port where it was expected to arrive in the morning.
Port service sources reported that the presence of the ship with clandestine migrants on board had been reported to the naval authorities by the crew of the 4619-tonne Bellis cargo ship, sailing under the Cook Islands flag. After receiving the notice from the Bellis, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) alerted the Romanian Sea Rescue Agency (ARSVOM) and the Coast Guard to initiate an operation to identify and rescue the on board of the ship if their life was endangered. According to information provided by the Automatic Identification Service (AIS), the ship had been stationed for several hours at 44.04392 North / 29.08499 East, being safely sheltered by the Bellis from the ongoing bad weather at sea, which prevented the authorities from coming into direct contact with the crew.
On Tuesday morning, around 03:00hrs, the Turkish ship with migrants was towed away by the Albatros rescue boat of ARSVOM, and escorted by two boats of the Coast Guard to Constanta Port. It was expected to reach port at about 08:00hrs for landing, identification and triage of the migrants on board.
