National Liberal Party (PNL) spokesman Ionut Stroe declared on Wednesday that the government is preparing for the visit to Brussels, where talks with the European Commission are scheduled, mainly about the possibility of changing Romania's budget deficit target.

"At today's meeting, we also discussed finances. Obviously, the preparation of the visit to Brussels is the key element of the government's current activity. Talks with the European Commission will include elements already mentioned publicly, the first of which is the possibility of reducing or modifying the budget deficit target and, of course, the approval of a plan of fiscal and expense-slashing measures," Stroe declared at the PNL headquarters after the meeting of the party's leadership with Liberal ministers and secretaries of state, agerpres reports.

According to the PNL spokesman, the government will issue the ordinances regarding the measures for the cut of budget expenses after the discussion with the European Commission.

Asked if the government will request in Brussels to renegotiate Romania's budget deficit target, Ionut Stroe said: "We expect flexibility from the Commission. Romania is not the only country that has difficulties with meeting the deficit target, we are putting in a lot of effort in relation to certain unforeseen expenses made in previous years and we expect the Commission to understand this and hope that there will be no immediate measures or sanctions for failing to meet the budget deficit target."
