Acting Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said on Wednesday that the agreement in principle between Romgaz and Azomures marks an important step towards restarting Romania's chemical fertiliser industry, which is essential for both agriculture and the wider economy.
"One of the key negotiations in recent months has focused on saving Azomures through Romgaz. It is an important step towards restarting Romania's fertiliser industry, which is vital for agriculture and for our economy," Bolojan wrote in a Facebook post.
He stressed that better use of gas from the Black Sea in the Romanian economy can be achieved by processing it domestically, starting next year.
"Using it for domestic fertiliser production means greater economic independence, more stable prices for farmers and, very importantly, saving and protecting jobs in central Romania. The agreement in principle between Romgaz and Azomures ensures the continued operation of the largest industrial capacity in this field. The actual takeover will take place in the next three to four months, after all approvals are obtained," Bolojan said.
He added that making better use of Black Sea gas through domestic processing has been a priority for the government in recent months.
Bolojan also thanked the leadership of Romgaz for conducting the negotiations professionally.
"The two directors are among the most serious people I have worked with in the past 10 months. If we had such leadership in more state-owned companies, things would work better," he said.
Romgaz announced that it has reached an agreement in principle with Azomures on the main commercial terms of a transaction to take over the plant's operational activity through a business transfer, with negotiations expected to be finalised by the end of this month.
