Former Prime Minister Adrian Năstase shared a heartfelt message following the death of former Romanian President Ion Iliescu. Năstase stated that Iliescu took with him “almost a century of Romanian history” and encouraged younger politicians to learn from the way Iliescu conducted himself in public life.
“Ion Iliescu has died, and with him, he took almost a century of Romanian history. He was a statesman who cultivated respect through dialogue. He knew how to wisely and calmly resolve many of the complex issues Romania faced during its post-1989 transition. He knew how to build teams, forge alliances, and most importantly, generate consensus on Romania’s major post-revolutionary challenges. In this regard, the Snagov Table remains a grand example.”
Năstase reflected on their long collaboration:
“We worked together starting in 1990. I owe him my entry into politics. I admired his political and human qualities—his passion for culture, his ability to listen and analyze. I admired his strength in communicating directly with ordinary people, as well as his presence at international meetings.”
He added:
“Most often, we shared similar views. I believe that in the last twenty years, his absence from public life was deeply felt. Many will likely appreciate him more now that he is gone. He wrote extensively, gave interviews, and delivered speeches. Looking around today, I hope younger generations will learn something from all this—though I’m not very optimistic.”
Năstase concluded his message with a quote from Iliescu’s 2004 reply to a letter:
“Dear Mr. Adrian Năstase, I respond affirmatively to the letters you’ve sent me, out of the conviction that we, as politicians, have a duty to Romania’s future: to act in a way that constantly serves the national interest, to build public good together, and a better life for all Romanians. This has been—and remains—my life’s commitment, a matter of conscience from which I will never stray.”
He ended with condolences:
“My condolences to Mrs. Nina. May Ion Iliescu remain in our memory as a Pillar of the Citadel. PS: Out of the thousands of photos together, I chose one with nostalgia that I believe symbolizes our bond.”
