Almost 1.5 million Romanians celebrate their name day on Tuesday, on the Feast of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel.
According to data available with the Directorate for Personal Records and Database Administration, of the 1,454,410 celebrants, 632,809 are women and 821,601 are men, all bearing the name of Gabriel/Gabriela, Mihai/Mihaela or derivatives thereof, told Agerpres.
For men, the most common first names are Mihai - 370,136 and Gabriel - 319,293.
Derivatives include the surnames Mihail - 60,421, Mihaita - 29,385, Mihnea - 11,093, Mihalache - 1,447, Gavril - 17,141, Gavrila - 6,105, and Gabi - 4,122.
Among women, the most frequent surnames are Mihaela - 367,761 and Gabriela - 253,517.
According to statistical data, other popular female variations are: Mihaiela - 6,504, Gabi - 3,431, Mihaila - 793, Mihaita - 578 or Gabita - 180.
The Orthodox Church celebrates the Feast of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel on November 8.
