The Romanians' contribution to the United Kingdom is greatly appreciated and is extraordinarily good, British ambassador Giles Portman said on Wednesday at the UK - Romania Defence Industry Day event organised at the National Military Club Palace by the British Embassy in Romania together with the Romanian Defence Ministry's General Directorate for Armaments and ADS Group.

The diplomat referred to the situation in Northern Ireland, where major protests broke out after two Romanian nationals were detained for allegedly assaulting a young woman, saying that reports on this case are obviously a reason for concern and it is the job of the police to investigate the details, agerpres reports.

But what I keep saying is that the Romanian diaspora in the United Kingdom is an extremely important part of our bilateral relationship, as over one million Romanian citizens live and thrive in the United Kingdom, contributing to our society, to our economy. The first Romanian Orthodox cathedral opened just a few weeks ago, we have the first Romanian archbishop, the first Romanian mayor, so the diaspora is making an extremely good contribution. Of course, when individual situations like the current one happen, it is important that the police investigate the case. My message regarding the Romanians' contribution in the United Kingdom is that it is enormously appreciated and is extraordinarily good, the diplomat said.

Recently, Ballymena was the epicenter of riots triggered by the indictment of two Romanian teenagers for the attempted rape of a young woman in the town located about 50 kilometers north of Belfast.
