Romania's annual inflation rate rose to 10.85% in May, up from 10.71% in April, as service prices increased by 13.53%, non-food goods by 12.54%, and food products by 6.78%, according to data published on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
'The Consumer Price Index (CPI) stood at 100.58% in May 2026 compared with April 2026. The inflation rate stood at 3.7% in the beginning of the year (May 2026 compared with December 2025). The annual inflation rate was 10.9% in May 2026 compared with May 2025. The average rate of change in consumer prices over the last 12 months was 9.4% (June 2025 - May 2026) compared with the previous 12-month period (June 2024 - May 2025),' the INS said in a press release, agerpres reports.
According to the statistical office, the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) was 100.69% in May 2026 compared with April 2026. The annual inflation rate was 9.7% in May 2026 compared with May 2025, calculated on the basis of the HICP. The average rate of change in consumer prices was 8.4% over the last 12 months (June 2025 - May 2026) compared with the preceding 12 months (June 2024 - May 2025), as measured by the HICP.
The National Bank of Romania (BNR) revised its end-2026 inflation forecast upwards to 5.5%, from a previous estimate of 3.9%, and expects inflation to fall to 2.9% by the end of 2027, according to data presented in May by BNR Governor Mugur Isarescu.
