Politicians, who are often immature, end up making the right decision on important issues, President Nicusor Dan stated on Saturday at the "Via Transilvanica Business Fest" event held in Piatra Fântânele, Bistrita-Nasaud County.
"If you follow the Romanian media both print and broadcast it seems like we are in the midst of a catastrophe. And the people evaluating us take seriously the things we say about ourselves. It isn't quite like that. I mean, there are major problems, there are minor problems, but there are also successes and results that Romania has achieved. There is this discussion about the country's credit rating. We are in a much better position than we were six months ago, much better than twelve months ago; and regarding key issues, politicians who are often immature do actually end up making the right decision," the head of state said.
Nicusor Dan stated that the private sector in our country has achieved success "despite" the state.
"I have great confidence in Romania's private sector. In my capacity, I meet with people from abroad from the financial sector and the political sphere who have witnessed Romania's spectacular economic growth, and clearly, this is thanks to you. Sometimes, this has happened despite the state's actions to put it very bluntly. So, I am extremely optimistic about Romania's economic future, and I will try to the best of my ability to ensure the state understands you better so that we can work together successfully," he stated.
The President also acknowledged Romania's progress regarding infrastructure, noting that this could contribute to people's mobility.
"I insist that we view our situation with balance, because it is easiest to simply say that things in Romania are a disaster. (...) We must also look at what we have achieved as a society, precisely so that we have a balanced perspective on where we stand. I believe that, thanks to the efforts Romania has made regarding infrastructure, it is much easier to choose to live in a village while working 20 or 30 kilometers away, making it economically viable for a young family deciding to stay in or move to the village," he pointed out.
The head of state also highlighted the disparity in the quality of education between rural and urban schools.
"I come from a rural area, and I go back there for Easter and Christmas. The first thing we need to do is correct the educational imbalance between urban and rural areas; when you are a young family with children, that is the first thing you think about whether or not your child has an equal chance. And this is a matter of vision, as well as a matter of financial incentives, because obviously for a young teacher, or indeed any teacher, working in the city is more appealing than in a village; there are more opportunities that is how many people see it," stated Nicusor Dan.
The President stated that he came to the "Via Transilvanica Business Fest" because this project unites people.
"We came specifically to make it even better known among Romanians... I believe the most important thing is that it unites communities; we don't really know one another, and because of that, we often rely on clichés both regarding each other and ourselves as a society. So, the more we manage to talk and understand how each of us views the world, the better we will succeed as a society in embracing who we are, with both our strengths and our flaws. Perhaps we might even manage to overcome what I consider our greatest societal shortcoming: not really knowing how to work together," noted Nicusor Dan.
The Head of State unveiled a marker on the Via Transilvanica and wrote "I believe in Romania" on it. He was accompanied by the founder of Via Transilvanica, Alin Useriu.
