The 11th edition of the Balkanik Festival - Home of World Music is ready to kick off at Bucharest's Uranus Garden, promising "a living museum of reinterpretation, diversity and discoveries", as the organizers said in a release, informs Agerpres.
For three days and three nights, Friday through Sunday, the historic garden in the center of Bucharest becomes the venue for live concerts, craft fairs and demonstrations, debates, DJ sets, jam sessions, exhibitions, video mapping shows on the local water tower, workshops and various activities for children, young people and adults. The showcased masters of tradition include Dumitru Muruzuc from the Republic of Moldova and his wife, who keep alive the trade of wood carving, embroidery and braiding; Miron Cosmin Georgian from Vrancea, who put his passion into weaving; Nicoleta Uta from Arges, who dedicated her life to preserving and passing on traditional needlework; young pottery artist Mihaela Plesea from Branistea; Victor Clopotar from Sibiu, a traditional metalworker who transforms copper, brass and silver into household and decorative objects; Monica Iacovenco and Icrus Florea, who explore the boundaries of traditional art, combining the passion for silver with the desire to create innovative pieces; Cosmin Ciobanu, who creates jewelry with ancient and ethnic inspired motifs, as well as leather accessories.
The attendees can see up close the famous water castle, a historical monument designed by engineer Anghel Saligny and built in 1899. The tower will be enlivened and illuminated with video mapping shows featuring nature elements, flora, and celestial bodies, created by cutting-edge digital artist Adistu, with the support of the world's foremost projector manufacturer Epson.
The festival opens its doors on Friday at 16:00, and on Saturday and Sunday the program starts at 12:00.
Live concerts by Rumeliko (Greece-Romania), Dikanda (Poland) and the Ciocarlia Fanfare (Romania) are slated for Friday. Taking the stage on the second day will be Phuripe (ex-Ternipe, Hungary), Kermesz A L'Est (Belgium) and Shantel & Bucovina Club Soundsystem (Germany), and September 8 will see the performances of Madalina Paval Orchestra (Romania), Collectif Medz Bazar (Armenia-France), and BaBa ZuLa (Turkey).
