The Bookfest Chisinau International Book Fair highlights the solid cultural foundation of the pro-European option of the majority of Moldovan citizens, president Klaus Iohannis said Wednesday in a message delivered by presidential advisor Sergiu Nistor on the occasion of the opening of the event in the capital of the neighboring country.

"In the context of the accession process of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union, the recent participation as a guest country at Bookfest Bucharest, as well as this edition of the Bookfest Chisinau International Book Fair highlights the solid cultural foundation of the pro-European option of the majority of citizens of the Republic of Moldova. Romania's support for this future and our solidarity are based on our common democratic and humanist values, born from the fertile soil of language, culture and historical experience that we share," the president said.

In fact, the event is under the high patronage of both the Romanian president and his counterpart, Maia Sandu.

"It is more proof of the importance that we attach, on both sides of the Prut, to the cultivation of the Romanian language, to the support and promotion of the culture and traditions that we share and under whose dome we are building a common future in the European Union," Klaus Iohannis said.

The president recalled each one's "fundamental books".

"These fundamental books are not limited to the writings of chroniclers or the works of classical authors studied at school. Contemporary literature, both Romanian and world literature, continues to offer us knowledge, values and models, dilemmas and challenges," he said.

In this context, Klaus Iohannis said that reading and books are, more than ever, essential in this period marked by challenges and multiple crises, being an expression of social normality and dialogue between cultures.

"It is, therefore, vital to respect and support those who contribute to the existence of the book and to encourage young people to realize its role in their formation, both as professionals and as people," added the head of state.

The Bookfest Bucharest Book Fair took place between May 29 and June 2, with the Republic of Moldova as guest country.
