Brancusi's sculpture 'The Kiss' - exhibited at Art Safari, until August 30

The famous sculpture "The Kiss" by Constantin Brancusi, the first of the Kiss cycle, will be exhibited until August 30 at Art Safari, as part of the Love Edition exhibition, told Agerpres

According to an Art Safari press release sent to AGERPRES on Monday, "The Kiss" is exhibited in Bucharest for the first time in the last 50 years, the most recent inclusion in an exhibition in Bucharest being in 1976.

"'The Kiss' by Brancusi, the first of the famous cycle dedicated to love, finds its perfect place among the masterpieces at the National Portrait Gallery. We thank the Craiova Museum of Art for the 10-day loan of a masterpiece that completes the Love Stories exhibition. It is an important first for Art Safari, but also for the Capital. On this occasion, we have a special visiting programme. Art Safari is open every day so that the public can admire 'The Kiss' in the largest possible number. They say that the first kiss is never forgotten, so we invite you to see it at Art Safari, along with the other 4 exhibitions of this season," said Ioana Ciocan, Art Safari CEO and Romania's Commissioner at the Venice Biennale.

'The Kiss' exhibited at Art Safari, in the collection of the Craiova Museum of Art, is made of marl stone in 1907 and is the first sculpture in the much loved Kisses series, on which Brancusi worked for 40 years. It is one of the artist's best-known masterpieces, along with "The Sleeping Muse" (1908), "Prometheus" (1911), "Miss Pogany" (1913), "The Newborn" (1915), "The Bird in Space" (1919) and "The Endless Column" (1938).

The masterpiece is exhibited as part of the "Love Stories" exhibition, in collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery, London, being part of the Romanian art insert dedicated to love. In Art Safari are also exhibited the love letters between Constantin Brancusi and his muse Florence Meyer. On one of them, Brancusi even drew a sketch of "The Kiss."

"The Kiss" is considered the first modern sculpture of the 20th century. It has been exhibited in major museums and art galleries around the world, including the Guggenheim Museum - New York, the Cartier Foundation - Paris, the Pompidou Centre - Paris, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the BOZAR Centre for the Arts in Brussels.

The sculpture has an insurance value of 22 million euros and was transported from the Craiova Art Museum to Bucharest under maximum security conditions by a company specialised in the transport of fine art, escorted by the Romanian Gendarmerie. The masterpiece is guarded non-stop at Art Safari, the source said.

Art Safari has a special visiting schedule: daily, between August 21 and 30, 12:00-21:00, plus Night Tours (Friday and Saturday, 22:00-1:00).
