The interim mayor of the capital, Stelian Bujduveanu, announced on Thursday that he had signed, together with representatives of the Bucharest-Ilfov Regional Development Agency, the non-repayable financing contracts through the Bucharest-Ilfov Regional Program 2021-2027, worth almost 2 billion RON, for the modernization of public transport in Bucharest.
According to a press release from the Bucharest City Hall, the financing will allow the acquisition of 100 modern and non-polluting trolleybuses, 63 new trams, the expansion of the tram network on Prelungirea Ghencea, by building a new 5.8 km double-track line and the acquisition of 16 trams, the modernization of approximately 50 km of tram lines, as well as the Titan and Colentina depots.
"Today was an important moment for the Capital and I am happy that we marked the end of this mandate with an essential investment for the future of the city. We signed the largest European financing for public transport in Bucharest. Almost 400 million euros will be invested in the modernization of tram lines, the rehabilitation of depots and the acquisition of new trams and trolleybuses. In addition to the almost 2 billion RON of non-repayable European financing, the Municipality of Bucharest turned to the European Investment Bank to ensure co-financing. The EIB approved a financing of 300 million euros to support the priority projects of the Capital City Hall in the field of mobility and modernization of surface public transport, as well as essential projects in the field of district heating," declared Bujduveanu, quoted in the press release.
Bujduveanu specified that the initiative is the result of "sustained work, carried out by the City Hall of the Capital and the Bucharest-Ilfov Regional Development Agency, and which represents a decisive step towards modern, efficient and less polluting public transport for Bucharest residents."
Dan Nicula, general director of ADR Bucharest-Ilfov, stated that the signing of this contract is an important achievement for the people of Bucharest.
"The City Hall's approach, which intelligently capitalizes on a mix of non-reimbursable European funds and borrowed resources, significantly increases the value and impact of the investment in the development of green mobility. This is an example through which European funds are transformed, day by day, into real solutions for a friendlier Bucharest, with modern mobility and a better quality of life for all its residents," said Nicula, according to the press release.
