A common package of legislative amendments regarding ballast pits will be finalized in a few days, so that we can stop the interest groups that stole Romania and destroyed entire communities, the Minister of Environment, Waters and Forests, Diana Buzoianu, announced on her social media page on Wednesday.
"Illegal ballast water dumps leave communities without water, destroy infrastructure, and endanger people's lives. The hundreds of illegal ballast water dumps that have resulted in hundreds of abandoned craters all over the country have been ignored by the control authorities for years. We no longer accept being forgotten elsewhere. We have exponentially increased controls, we have exposed the phenomenon of fish ponds that were a front for ballast water dumps, we have launched the ballast water dump inspector. Now we are in the phase of amending the legislation to stop these mafias in the future. So I was happy to have the meeting convened these days by Mr. Ilie Bolojan, at the Government, to discuss in detail what proposals for legislative amendments we have so that the exploitation of aggregates no longer endangers Romanians. I thank the Prime Minister for supporting legislation in the field of ballast water dumps that is much better than what we have now," Buzoianu wrote on Facebook.
According to the head of the Environment Ministry, one of the proposals advanced refers to increasing the value of the guarantees that are requested for failure to fulfill obligations by approved companies.
"Among the proposals that we supported during the meeting are: limiting the deadlines provided for in the approvals for the construction of fish ponds, increasing the guarantees required for failure to fulfill obligations by approved companies, clear sanctions applied for failure to carry out the work undertaken in the projects, creating a clearer mechanism for executing guarantees in case of failure to fulfill legal obligations (...) There is no reason why, in a few days, we should not come up with a common package of legislative amendments, so as to stop the interest groups that have stolen Romania and destroyed entire communities," emphasized Diana Buzoianu.
The Government meeting was attended by representatives from the National Administration "Romanian Waters", the National Environmental Guard and the National Regulatory Authority for Mining, Petroleum and Geological Storage of Carbon Dioxide.
