The "Alexandru Borza" Botanical Garden in Cluj-Napoca marked, on Wednesday, the 100th anniversary of its opening to the public.

The Director of the Botanical Garden, Prof. Dr. Mihai Puşcaş, declared, on the occasion of the anniversary event, that the institution he leads is the most visited tourist attraction in Cluj and among the first in the entire country.

"In the 100 years since we opened to the public, the notoriety of the Botanical Garden has grown constantly. We are number 1 in Cluj-Napoca, in terms of attractiveness and as a recommended objective, which, as far as I know, is quite unique for a botanical garden, Cluj being an important city, with many objectives. We are in 14th place in Transylvania, in 32nd place in Romania in terms of attractiveness," said Mihai Puscas.

The number of visitors has grown steadily since its opening, from approximately 16,000 in 1926 to over 250,000 visitors annually today.

"Two years ago we exceeded an important threshold, a quarter of a million visitors annually, and whose number has increased considerably in recent years, especially thanks to the events we organize and the fact that we are increasingly popularizing what we have here," said Mihai Puscas.

On the occasion of the centenary, the director of the Botanical Garden, Prof. Dr. Mihai Puscas, and the interim rector of the "Babes-Bolyai" University, Prof. Dr. Adrian Petrusel, symbolically planted two saplings of Araucaria araucana, a very rare species, which only exists in a few areas of Argentina and Chile and which the "Alexandru Borza" Botanical Garden is trying to acclimatize.
